Harju County Court in Estonia declared Reed Straw OÜ bankrupt today, marking the end of the reed-based drinking straw producer's operations. The company had been one of the notable eco-friendly manufacturing ventures in the country.

Earlier this year, the 25-employee company had already signalled its deteriorating situation by notifying the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund of collective redundancies — a formal step required under Estonian law when a significant number of workers are laid off simultaneously.

Reed Straw OÜ had positioned itself in the sustainable packaging market, producing drinking straws from natural reed as an alternative to plastic. The business appeared to align well with growing European regulatory pressure to phase out single-use plastics, but it was ultimately unable to sustain its operations financially.

The bankruptcy was reported by Äripäev, Estonia's leading business newspaper. The case will now proceed through the standard insolvency process, with a court-appointed trustee overseeing the handling of the company's remaining assets and liabilities.
