29-year-old left-wing socialist wins Colorado Democratic primary
In Colorado, young democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated Diana DeGette, a congresswoman who has served for decades, reflecting growing discontent with the Democrats' centrist leadership. The struggle for the party's future continues across the country, with left-wing candidates achieving several major victories in recent primaries.
PoliticsColorado held a surprising Democratic primary election on Tuesday: 29-year-old democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated Diana DeGette, a long-serving congresswoman who has been in the House of Representatives for decades.
Young challenger toppled the veteran
The 68-year-old DeGette has been one of the most influential politicians in the House of Representatives, but Kiros's campaign managed to mobilize voters who feel the party leadership has lost touch with their interests. "Incumbent politicians are too complacent. I think we're seeing, frankly, a referendum on the party leadership, to actually fight for the policies that voters care about," said Melat Kiros after the results were announced.
During the campaign, Kiros actively criticized corruption and the party's internal complacency. The funding picture was starkly divided: DeGette was supported by pro-Israel organizations and political action committees, while Kiros received backing from pro-Palestine organizations.
Broader trend within Democrats
Colorado is not an exception. The Wall Street Journal views it as the latest state where a battle for the party's future is unfolding. Last week, New York's primary saw success for three left-wing candidates, two of whom belong to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). In recent years, left-wing candidates have also achieved success in Seattle, Washington, California, and Maine.
However, centrists have managed to defend their positions in some places. Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper, a 74-year-old former governor and former Denver mayor, defeated left-wing challenger Julie Gonzales. Hickenlooper's campaign budget was nearly $7.7 million, while Gonzales had less than a million dollars.
November general election is the next test
Left-wing politician Manny Rutinel won the Democratic primary in Colorado's most competitive congressional district and will face Republican Gabe Evans in the November general election. Democrats want to regain a majority in the House, and this district is one of the key areas. Rutinel must prove that left-wing candidates can succeed not only in primaries, but also in general elections.
The recent rise of left-wing candidates is partly attributed to the influence of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been one of the leading figures of the American progressive movement over the past decade and has inspired many new politicians to run for office.
