A boss's field guide: the helicopter manager won't survive a serious crisis

Ahti Kallikorm, long-time senior executive and Tallinn Kristiine district head, writes about different management styles. He describes the so-called helicopter manager, who bounces from job to job like a bee – present when things run smoothly, but gone when crisis strikes.

Tallinn Kristiine district head and long-time senior executive Ahti Kallikorm (Isamaa) shares observations about different management styles in his "A boss's field guide" column. This time, he takes a closer look at the so-called helicopter manager – a leader who moves from position to position like a bee hopping from flower to flower.

The helicopter manager is present precisely when his services are needed and the organization is on a successful course. But as soon as a serious crisis looms or responsibility grows beyond his comfort zone, he's already on his way to the next position. Such a leader may temporarily create an impression of competence and energy, but his true worth only becomes apparent when things get difficult.

According to Kallikorm, recognizing the helicopter manager in an organization is important, because the team suffers most under such a leader, left without strong guidance in difficult times. The question is not merely one of personal ambition, but also of accountability to the people being led.
