Academician Kirsimäe: Estonia's subsoil may hide gold and silver

According to academician Kalle Kirsimäe, the well-known saying that Estonia has neither gold nor silver no longer holds true. Modern geological surveys have identified traces of both metals in Estonian soil, including natural gold.

Estonia

Estonians have passed down through generations the knowledge that our land's greatest riches are fertile farmland and abundant forests. However, geologists have reached the conclusion that Estonia's subsoil may hide far more than previously assumed.

Academician Kalle Kirsimäe recently confirmed that the well-known saying, which claims that Estonia has neither gold nor silver, no longer fully holds true. Modern research methods have made it possible to identify the occurrence of both precious metals within Estonian territory, and in certain locations even natural gold has been found.

According to geologists, contemporary analytical techniques have made it possible to detect such metals that earlier generations of researchers could not even imagine. Estonia's geological composition thus offers considerably more potential than is typically known to the public.

Kirsimäe emphasised that these are not necessarily locations of major economic significance, but from a scientific perspective it is an important discovery that changes our previous understanding of Estonia's subsoil. The range of Estonia's mineral resources is thus broader than the knowledge acquired from schooldays would suggest.
