Aivar Kuusmaa's 59th Birthday: The Sweetness of University of Tartu Championship Glory and the Hidden Side of Coaching
Aivar Kuusmaa, head coach of the University of Tartu basketball team, celebrates his 59th birthday today. Recently, he led the team to the Estonian championship after an 11-year drought. Kuusmaa spoke about the behind-the-scenes of coaching, stress tolerance, and life more broadly.
SportAivar Kuusmaa, head coach of the University of Tartu basketball team, celebrates his 59th birthday today, a day that coincides with one of the most important achievements of his career from the recently concluded season. Kuusmaa led the team to the Estonian championship after a title-less period lasting 11 years, adding gold to his personal list of accomplishments-the previous peak of which, by his own account, dates back 14 years.
"Of course it's sweet!" Kuusmaa exclaimed right after the final match, when the University of Tartu's championship title was secured. This brief statement carried within it years of effort, disappointments, and perseverance-qualities that the experienced coach has both taught to his players over the years and embodied himself.
The Hidden Side of Coaching
Kuusmaa has admitted openly that his stress tolerance has changed over the years. "My stress tolerance has become lower, because I no longer want to take a beating," he explained, referring to experience that gives him a clearer picture of what he is willing to endure and what he is not. This is not weakness, but maturity-knowing where to direct one's energy.
According to Kuusmaa, coaching is much more than tactical solutions on the court. Managing people, maintaining motivation over a long season, and managing one's own emotions form a large part of the daily work that spectators in the stands never see.
A Season for the History Books
The concluded season for the University of Tartu basketball team proved exceptional both for the club and for Kuusmaa himself. The 11-year wait without a championship title was long, but the gold medal reminded him why all this coaching work has been worth it. It would be hard to imagine a better birthday gift.
