The series, which brings together the most valuable parts of Estonian thought throughout history, is considered the publisher's most important publication.

The book reminds readers of Karis's diverse career and professional background. Before becoming president, he has led the Estonian National Museum, worked as state controller, and been rector of both Tartu University and the Estonian University of Life Sciences. By education, Karis is a developmental biologist and molecular geneticist.

The work summarizes the president's thoughts and public statements over three decades, reflecting both a scientist's and a statesman's perspective on the world. The title "The World in Vitro and in Vivo" references terminology from the scientific world, which characterizes Karis's background as a natural scientist.
