Culture

Russian war correspondent and Kremlin critic Arkadi Babtchenko has documented his experiences in the Russian military, describing brutal beatings and a systematic culture of torture that prevailed in barracks. His memoirs depict scenes in which young soldiers were beaten out of their bunks and struck throughout the night until their sweat and blood formed a puddle on the floor.

Babtchenko describes one such night when his fellow soldier Andryukha bore not only sweat but also bloody wounds, with deep sores on his legs bleeding together with perspiration. These memories stem from the period when Babtchenko served in the Russian army and experienced firsthand the military's brutal system of discipline.

A Staged Spectacle That Shocked the World

Babtchenko gained wider public attention in 2018 when Ukraine's SBU, the country's security service, staged his assassination in Kyiv. The journalist was declared dead, photographs of his bloodied body were circulated in the media, and only hours later he appeared alive at a press conference. The operation's purpose was to apprehend a hitman hired from Russia and neutralise a genuine conspiracy against his life.

Babtchenko left Russia after his public criticism of the war created a dangerous situation for him in the country. The journalist, now living in Ukraine, has continued writing about Russian military atrocities and the realities of war. His work offers a rare insider's look at a system whose very existence the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.
