PoliticsA 21-year-old Austrian man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting to plotting a terrorist attack targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The case drew widespread international attention when the threat forced organisers to cancel three sold-out performances in the Austrian capital.
The man pleaded guilty to planning the attack as well as a number of other terrorism-related offences. Authorities uncovered the plot ahead of the scheduled concerts, preventing what could have been a mass-casualty event at a venue expected to draw tens of thousands of fans.
The Vienna concerts were cancelled in August 2024 after Austrian security services, working alongside international intelligence partners, identified the credible threat. The cancellations affected roughly 170,000 ticket holders across the three planned shows.
The case highlighted the ongoing threat posed by lone-actor and extremist-inspired terrorism targeting large public gatherings across Europe. Austrian authorities were widely praised for their swift action in neutralising the threat before any harm occurred.
