Canada's historic six goals
Host nation Canada crushed Qatar 6:0 in Vancouver, making football history. This was the first team outside Europe and South America to score more than five goals in a single World Cup match.
Qatar's situation was complicated by two player dismissals, with Homam Al Amin receiving a red card in the 33rd minute and Assim Madibo following suit in the 53rd, leaving Qatar with just nine players — but the summary says 10-man Qatar, so the body must be consistent.
Canada's standout star was Juventus striker Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick. According to statistics agency Opta, David is only the second North and Central American player to score a hat-trick at the World Cup-the last player from that region to achieve this was American Bert Patenaude in 1930. Former Nõmme Kalju striker Promise David remained on the bench throughout the match.
Mexico first to secure progression
Host nation Mexico became the first team at the ongoing World Cup to secure progression from their group, beating South Korea 1:0 with Luis Romo's lone goal in the 50th minute. Mexico have two wins from two matches.
Switzerland overcome Bosnia in dramatic finish
Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4:1, though the match proved dramatic. Substitute Johan Manzambi scored two goals and Ruben Vargas added one. Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka converted a penalty, striking it firmly into the bottom right corner. Bosnia's sole goal came from substitute Ermin Mahmic, who struck the ball cleanly into the net from open play.
Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic received a red card in the 80th minute after fouling Breel Embolo, who was bearing down on goal as the last defender. Match statistics showed Switzerland's clear dominance: Switzerland had 13 shots on target (7 on frame), Bosnia just 5 (3). Switzerland's expected goals (xG) was 2.00, Bosnia's just 0.24.
Mexico remained the tournament's first team to secure progression, having achieved a perfect record in their group.
