Cardiologist Dr Viigimaa: this daily habit protects you from the worst

Poor sleep, unexplained anxiety and rapid heartbeat may not simply be signs of stress-they could be the body's first warning signals of a serious health problem. Cardiologist Dr Margus Viigimaa explains how to maintain your health in a fast-paced life and prevent heart disease.

Many people regard poor sleep, constant anxiety and heart palpitations as an inevitable part of stress and a hectic lifestyle. But Margus Viigimaa, Estonia's renowned cardiologist, warns that these symptoms could be the body's first and urgent distress signals that must not be ignored.

According to Dr Viigimaa, cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Estonia, yet many cases can be prevented through timely preventive measures. The most important thing is to change everyday habits, even with the busiest work schedules.

Experts emphasise that regular physical activity, balanced nutrition and sufficient sleep are the cornerstones of heart health. Just 30 minutes of moderate movement per day significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is also important to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly, especially for people over 40.

Viigimaa stresses that stress is one of the most important, yet often underestimated risk factors. Chronic stress raises blood pressure, promotes inflammation and can lead to dangerous heart rhythm disorders. Therefore, relaxation skills and psychological balance are as important for heart health as exercise.

The cardiologist recommends that anyone who experiences frequent palpitations, shortness of breath or clearly unexplained anxiety should consult a doctor without delay. Early detection and intervention can save lives.
