Inside China's EV powerhouse

From battery production to software development, Chinese automakers have cultivated tightly interconnected networks of suppliers, engineers, and technology firms that allow them to move faster and cheaper than their Western rivals. The factories visited by BBC journalists showcased levels of automation and scale that few global competitors can currently match.

Brands such as BYD have gone from relative obscurity to becoming genuine threats to legacy giants like Volkswagen, Toyota, and General Motors. Chinese manufacturers can produce EVs at price points that Western carmakers find difficult to compete with, partly due to lower labour costs and state subsidies, but increasingly also because of genuine technological and logistical efficiency.

Western response under pressure

European and American automakers have responded with a mix of tariffs, joint ventures, and accelerated electrification programmes of their own — but analysts warn these measures may be too little, too late. The EU has already imposed additional tariffs on Chinese-made EVs imported into Europe, citing concerns about unfair subsidies distorting the market.

The broader question now facing the global auto industry is whether traditional carmakers can reinvent themselves fast enough to survive a shift that China appears to be leading. With EV adoption accelerating worldwide, the window for catching up is narrowing, and the factories BBC reporters toured suggest China is not slowing down.
