Circle K payment system glitch freezes customer funds in Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and Norway

A malfunction in Circle K's payment system resulted in larger-than-normal amounts being held on customers' bank accounts at self-service fuel pumps, which did not automatically release after the transaction completed. The issue affected customers in Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and Norway. The company apologized for the incident.

One of Scandinavia and the Baltics' largest fuel station chains, Circle K, encountered an awkward situation due to a payment error. Larger-than-normal amounts of money remained frozen on the bank accounts of customers who refuelled at self-service pumps and were not automatically released when the transaction ended.

The glitch caused widespread confusion among customers, as many discovered after refuelling that significantly larger amounts than expected had been blocked on their accounts. This situation can cause problems for customers, especially if their accounts lack sufficient funds to cover other expenses.

A problem affecting multiple countries

Circle K confirmed that the issue was not limited to Estonia alone. "In addition to Estonia, the same problem occurred in Latvia, Sweden and Norway," the company explained. Thus the payment system malfunction affected customers in four different countries across the Baltics and Scandinavia.

The company apologized for the incident and confirmed that it is working to resolve the issue. The exact cause of the glitch and the number of customers whose money was frozen have not been publicly disclosed.
