Cuban opposition leader in Tallinn: now is the opportunity to topple the communist regime

Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat, director of the Cuban Resistance Movement Assembly, says that Russia's weakening, the collapse of the Maduro regime under US pressure, and the Trump administration's pressure campaign have created a unique opportunity for the collapse of Cuban communist power. Gutierrez-Boronat recently visited Tallinn, where he shared his assessments of Cuba's future.

Politics

Cuban Resistance Movement Assembly director Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat visited Tallinn and explained to Postimees why the current international situation could prove transformative for Cuba's communist regime.

Three factors exerting pressure

Gutierrez-Boronat highlighted three main forces that are currently creating extraordinary pressure on the Havana regime. First, Russia's military and economic weakening-a long-time supporter that has kept the Cuban government afloat for decades-is itself in difficulty. Second, Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's regime has come under strong US pressure and has capitulated to American demands, leaving Cuba even more isolated. Third, the Trump administration has launched a forceful pressure campaign against Cuba's communist leadership.

Supporters are weakening

According to the opposition leader, Cuba's regime has historically depended largely on foreign allies, first the Soviet Union and later Russia and Venezuela. The simultaneous weakening of both supporters means that the Havana leadership faces economic and political pressure that it has not previously had to deal with.

What the future may bring

Gutierrez-Boronat stressed that while an opportunity has emerged, this does not mean change will automatically arrive. The Cuban opposition and the international community must actively use this window. In his assessment, the Tallinn visit is part of a broader effort to present the Cuban opposition's viewpoints to European countries, which have their own experience of breaking free from communist rule.
