Day 1565 of war: Russia targets transport links between Kharkiv and Sumy
Russia continues attacks in Ukraine, directing strikes at transport connections between Kharkiv and Sumy. The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for over four years since Russia's full-scale invasion began on 24 February 2022.
PoliticsUkraine is experiencing its 1565th day of war as Russian armed forces have begun targeting transport links between Kharkiv and Sumy regions, seeking to disrupt Ukraine's supply lines and logistics in the country's northeast.
After Ukraine managed to repel Russia's offensive towards Kyiv in spring 2022, the focus of military operations has shifted to eastern and southern Ukraine. Fighting in Kharkiv region has continued with varying intensity, while Sumy region has experienced cross-border attacks and tensions in the area remain high.
Targeting transport links is a key element of Russia's military strategy, aimed at cutting through Ukraine's supply routes and hampering the movement of troops and supplies to frontline areas. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has been under Russian attack throughout the war and is located merely tens of kilometres from the Russian border.
Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, violating international law and Ukraine's sovereignty. The international community has responded with extensive sanctions against Russia and military and economic aid to Ukraine.
