Defense tech startups swimming in cash—but which will survive?

The defense technology sector is currently the darling of investors: Anduril and Mach Industries have doubled and quadrupled their valuations respectively, and the US government plans to increase its defense budget by 40%. However, venture capitalist Ross Fubini warns that most new startups fall into a "death valley" trap—the gap between prototype contracts and real government procurement deals. Only those with the right strategy have a chance of survival.

Technology

The defense technology sector has become one of the most exciting fields for investors. The US government plans to increase its defense budget by 40%, which has opened the door to a huge influx of new startups seeking a slice of that funding.

Valuations through the roof

Unlike many other sectors, defense companies have grown exponentially. Anduril Industries recently doubled its valuation, while Mach Industries quadrupled theirs, demonstrating investor optimism about the sector. Yet Ross Fubini, the venture capitalist who wrote Anduril's first check, sees warning signs.

The death valley trap

Fubini warns that most new defense technology startups fall into a "death valley"—a trap between prototype contracts and real government procurement deals. Prototype funding is relatively easy to secure, but landing large-scale procurement contracts requires entirely different resources, connections, and patience. Many companies get a good cash injection early on but struggle to navigate the complexity of the contracting process.

Who will survive?

According to Fubini, successful defense technology companies must understand that the government procurement cycle is long and demands a clear strategy. Simply raising money is not enough—companies also need specific expertise in defense industry regulations, long-term contracting, and the complex bureaucracy of the state defense sector. Those with the right team and strategy can capture a significant share of the expanding defense market.
