SportAt the disc golf major tournament held at Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, Estonian Mauri Villmann delivered the season's best performance on Saturday, carding -10 and climbing 23 places to ninth position overall.
Buhr leads by a large margin
Tournament leader Gannon Buhr heads into the final round with a three-day score of -30, giving him a nine-stroke lead over fellow American Ricky Wysocki in second place. In third position is defending champion Calvin Heimburg, who trails Buhr by ten strokes. On Saturday, Buhr was best again, shooting -12.
Villmann's resurgence in the tournament
Villmann's progress through the tournament has been impressive. On the opening day he shot +2, improved to -4 on Friday, and on Saturday achieved the season's best round with -10. "Finally I got a really good round! Getting double digits under par here is still pretty solid," Villmann admitted after the round. He added that there is always something to leave on the course: "With a perfect round the score would be -18, but there's always something left on the course."
The disc golf ace from Vasalemma acknowledged that he has been dogged by a sort of curse this year. "I can always play one round worse, which keeps me out of the top five, but climbing back up isn't so bad. I just have to give myself a chance," he said. He reinforced his confidence at the end of the day by throwing the disc into the basket from 19 metres away. For Sunday's final round, Villmann's plan is simple: "I'll play the exact same game. I hope it works out."
Other Estonians falter
Saturday went worse for other Estonians. Roland Kõur and Ville Kivisilla, who were still in the top ten on Friday, had to settle for above-par scores on Saturday. Kõur played one stroke over par, Kivisilla six. Before the final round, they hold 15th and 21st places respectively, with Albert Tamm sharing the latter position with Kivisilla after carding one stroke under par on the third day.
Also advancing to the final round were Maico Rimmel, who sits 30th after three rounds with a score of -3, and Mathias Villota, who made it just inside the line with +5.
