England seeks group top spot against Panama in Qatar
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, England will face Panama on Saturday night into Sunday in the final round of Group L. England leads the group with four points and has already secured progression, but a win would guarantee a more favourable knockout position. ETV and ERR's sports portal will broadcast the match live from 23:50.
SportThe final matches of Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place in North America will be held on Saturday night into Sunday, including the match between England and Panama. ERR will broadcast the match live on ETV and the sports portal, with commentary by Tarmo Tiisler and Joel-Rasmus Remmel, coverage beginning at 23:50.
England, strong start, then disappointment
England began the tournament with an impressive 4:2 victory over Croatia, with goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. In their second match, however, came a disappointing 0:0 draw with Ghana; the English created plenty of chances, but with no goals forthcoming, Ghana were denied a penalty in the 79th minute.
Despite this, England leads Group L with four points. Following Uruguay's loss, it became clear that England had secured progression at least as a third-placed team. However, their final position will significantly affect their path through the knockout stage.
Top spot offers easier knockout route
The Group L winners will face one of the third-placed teams in the round of 16 and potentially Mexico in the next round. Second place would mean facing Portugal or Colombia in the opening round, and likely Spain in the second round-a considerably harder path.
For England to secure top spot, they can rely on a favourable result in the simultaneous Ghana v Croatia match, even a draw or defeat. A win remains the most straightforward approach.
Tuchel resolves injury issues
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that the team must manage without injured defender Reece James. There is also uncertainty over Elliott Anderson, who recently joined Manchester City, and midfielder Declan Rice missed the final training session.
"I'm happy with my selections. I put this team together, I'm satisfied with these players and their qualities," said Tuchel. "Of course I'd like to have all the key players available, would want them here. But we solve problems, that's our job. This is a long tournament, we must move forward."
Panama, resilient but without progression
Panama are participating in the World Cup for only the second time, but have yet to record a single victory, neither in 2018 in Russia nor now in North America. The team managed by Denmark-born coach Thomas Christiansen is built solidly in defence and can pose threats on the counter-attack.
Panama's captain is winger Yoel Bárcenas, with midfielder Michael Murillo and record international defender Anibal Godoy also considered leaders. For Panama, their current position unfortunately no longer allows progression; both Ghana and Croatia defeated them by a single goal.
