Estonian Defence Force conducts exercises on state-owned land near Nursipalu

Estonia's defence force is using the Nursipalu training ground to conduct military exercises on land acquired by the state. Meanwhile, concerns are growing that Latvia may not complete its section of Rail Baltic by 2030.

Estonia

The Estonian defence force has begun exercises at the Nursipalu training ground, where the state has expanded its landholdings. The Nursipalu area in Põlva County has long served military purposes, but in recent years the state has actively been acquiring privately owned properties in the region to increase the scope and capabilities of military exercises.

For the defence force, the expansion of the Nursipalu training ground is an important step in raising operational readiness. The expanded areas make it possible to conduct larger-scale manoeuvre exercises and test various tactical scenarios that were previously limited due to the confined territory. This is part of a broader plan to develop Estonia's defence capabilities, with the aim of ensuring the country's military preparedness.

At the same time, the question of the Rail Baltic project's progress in neighbouring Latvia is becoming increasingly pressing. Several analysts and politicians have expressed doubts whether Latvia will be able to complete its section—which is meant to connect Riga with the other Baltic states' rail networks—by 2030. Problems related to construction pace and financing have raised concerns about the coordination of the entire project.

Rail Baltic is a joint project of the three Baltic states aimed at building a high-speed rail connection compatible with Europe's rail network from Tallinn through Riga to Warsaw. The project is considered important both economically and strategically, as it improves connections with the rest of Europe and enhances regional security. Delays in one country, however, could affect the timeline of the entire project.
