Estonian language tip: 'taotlema' and 'töötama' don't change their stem
Language columnist Riina Pohlak explains that the Estonian verbs 'taotlema' (to apply) and 'töötama' (to work) are gradation-free words, meaning their stem remains unchanged across all conjugations. This is a common source of confusion for Estonian language learners and speakers alike.
CultureEstonian language specialist Riina Pohlak has shared a practical grammar tip in her regular language column, focusing on two frequently used verbs that often trip up speakers: 'taotlema' (to apply/request) and 'töötama' (to work).
According to Pohlak, both verbs belong to the category of gradation-free words in Estonian — meaning their word stem does not change depending on the grammatical form or conjugation. Unlike many Estonian words that undergo consonant or vowel gradation when declined or conjugated, these two verbs remain stable throughout all their forms.
This stability means that speakers and writers should not alter the stem when using the words in different tenses or persons. The correct forms follow a consistent pattern, which makes them easier to use once the principle is understood. Mistakes often arise when speakers incorrectly apply gradation rules that simply do not apply to these words.
