The Estonian Olympic Committee (EOC) is taking a significant step towards international sports education: from 2027, the EOC will become a full partner of the Nordic International Leadership Education programme, or NILE. The cooperation agreement was signed at a meeting held in Budapest, where Estonia was represented by Gerd Kanter, acting president of the EOC.

What is the NILE programme?

NILE is an international sports leadership training programme established in 2013 through collaboration between Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. The programme's core objective is to prepare sports leaders who can contribute to the work of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), European Olympic Committees (EOC), international federations, and the broader global sports movement. Now all three Baltic states-Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania-have expanded into the programme's ranks.

Why is this important for Estonia?

In today's global sports world, success depends not just on competition results. People who shape sports policy, represent national interests in international organisations and participate in important decision-making on the global stage are becoming increasingly vital. The NILE programme creates a concrete pathway for Estonian sports leaders and former elite athletes to take on exactly these kinds of roles, opening doors to the networks of European and global sports organisations.

EOC training director Piret Lauk-Olov emphasised the programme's strategic importance: "We want Estonian sports leaders to be not only good specialists, but also influential partners in international sports. NILE provides a valuable opportunity for this, helping to grow Estonia's influence in the places where future sports policy is shaped and important decisions are made."

Baltic states join together

Estonia's participation is part of a broader Baltic initiative, with Latvia and Lithuania joining the programme at the same time, which strengthens the Baltic states' collective voice in international sports leadership. Full partnership will take effect in 2027, when Estonian sports leaders will have the opportunity to participate in NILE training and apply the knowledge they gain within the international sports community.
