Estonian referee Mihkel Männiste assigned to Istanbul U-17 basketball worlds
Estonian basketball referee Mihkel Männiste has been selected to officiate at the FIBA U-17 basketball world championships in Istanbul, Turkey, running from 27 June to 5 July 2026. The tournament will feature 28 referees from 25 countries and will be contested by 16 of the world's best U-17 teams. For Männiste, the tournament also serves as preparation for the FIBA women's world championships to be held in Berlin in September.
SportEstonian basketball referee Mihkel Männiste will participate in the 2026 FIBA U-17 basketball world championships in Istanbul, Turkey, where he is one of 28 referees from 25 different countries. The tournament runs from 27 June to 5 July and brings together 16 of the world's strongest U-17 teams.
Eight weeks of preparation
According to Männiste, preparation for the world championships began in late April and has lasted eight weeks. "The preparation programme included regular video conferences, analysis of match footage, mental preparation lectures and an individual training programme," he explained. In Istanbul, all tournament referees gathered three days before the start of competition for a 2.5-day camp, where they refined uniform whistle criteria, practised using the instant replay system, and conducted both classroom instruction and practical court training.
"The goal is to have the referees as physically and technically well-prepared as the competing teams when the tournament begins," Männiste added.
The youth worlds demands a different approach
Although the rules of the game are identical at international youth and senior competitions, refereeing at the youth worlds demands a different approach in Männiste's view. "Young players often act more emotionally and unpredictably, and the referee must communicate more, anticipate situations and be prepared for unexpected outcomes," he explained.
At the same time, Männiste emphasised that this is a high-level tournament. "The best teams in their age category are competing, and the quality expected from referees is exactly as professional as at senior international competitions," he said.
Eyes on Berlin
Männiste's previous international experience includes European championship qualifiers, European club series matches and U-19 world championships. However, the Istanbul tournament is primarily an important step for him towards the FIBA women's world championships to be held in Germany in September. Following the U-17 worlds, FIBA will make its final selection of referees who will officiate at matches between the world's top women's national teams in Berlin.
