Estonian strawberries are a luxury item: when will prices drop?

Estonian strawberries are currently commanding premium prices at markets like Tallinn's Nõmme turg. Sellers say the domestic berry is a true delicacy, with even expatriate Estonians praising them as the best in the world.

At Tallinn's Nõmme market, strawberries grown in the Mulgimaa region are selling at steep prices — but vendors say that's entirely justified for a product of this quality. Indrek Ernesaks, who sells the locally grown berries at the market, says the price per kilogram may sting, but Estonian strawberries are genuinely a seasonal delicacy right now.

«Estonians living abroad have told me when visiting that they haven't been able to find better strawberries anywhere in the world than here in Estonia!» said Ernesaks, reflecting the pride that domestic growers take in their product.

The short Estonian growing season means local strawberries are available for only a limited window each summer, which keeps supply tight and prices high early in the season. As the harvest picks up momentum across more farms and growing regions, market prices are expected to gradually ease in the coming weeks.
