Estonian travel to Finland continues to grow, 75,000 overnight stays in five months
In the first five months of 2026, Estonian tourists spent nearly 75,000 nights in Finnish accommodation facilities, which is 9% more than a year earlier. Most preferred hotels, where the number of overnight stays increased by 8.6%. Finnish tourism overall is advancing thanks to international visitors, although May saw some decline.
EstoniaEstonian tourists are visiting Finland increasingly actively. According to Statistics Finland, Estonian travellers spent a total of 74,964 nights in Finnish hotels, campsites and other accommodation facilities from January to May 2026, which is 9% more than in the same period a year earlier.
Over the five-month period, Estonian residents made 36,507 trips with overnight stays in Finland. Hotels remained the most popular choice, accounting for 58,232 overnight stays, or 8.6% more than the previous year.
Monthly trends vary
Growth was most noticeable at the start of the year in February, when overnight stays increased by 14%, and in April, when growth reached 8.9%. May, by contrast, was more modest, with overnight stays declining by 1% compared to the same period of the previous year, totalling 13,413. During May, 7,427 Estonian tourists visited Finland.
Finnish tourism growing thanks to international visitors
In the broader picture, Finland's tourism sector has done well at the start of 2026, primarily thanks to foreign visitors. From January to May, the country registered a total of 8.4 million overnight stays, surpassing figures from the same period last year. While domestic tourists' overnight stays decreased, those of international visitors increased by nearly 13%, reaching 2.84 million.
May, however, proved to be a weaker month. Finnish accommodation facilities registered 1.55 million overnight stays that month, which is 2.9% less than in May 2025. The decline affected both domestic tourists (2.8%) and international visitors (3.1%).
Uusimaa is the most popular region
In May, most international visitors to Finland came from Sweden, Germany and the United States. The most popular destination remained Uusimaa, which recorded approximately 640,000 overnight stays. Hotels had an average occupancy rate of 52% and an average room price of 116 euros per night. The highest prices were also in Uusimaa, where a room cost an average of 123 euros.
