EU Unlocks 16.4 Billion for Hungary After Maďár Takes Power

Politics

The European Union has unlocked 16.4 billion in financing for Hungary — a decision that has become a significant political signal in the first weeks after the new Prime Minister Peter Maďár took office. The leader of Hungary's new government has held his position for less than three weeks.

Representatives from Brussels have characterized the situation as a "wind of change" in relations between the European Union and Budapest. The thawing of funds demonstrates the EU's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the new Hungarian government — in contrast to years of disputes with the previous Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The End of the Orbán Era

Under Orbán, Hungary systematically violated the rule of law, which led to the freezing of a significant portion of European subsidies. Brussels consistently held back the transfer of funds from cohesion funds and the Recovery Plan, pressing Budapest to implement systemic reforms in judicial independence and the fight against corruption.

Relations between Hungary and the EU under Orbán were further complicated by Budapest's position on Ukraine: Hungary repeatedly blocked European decisions on military aid to Kyiv and opposed the introduction of sanctions against Russia. The arrival of Maďár in power creates a fundamentally different negotiating atmosphere.

A Signal for the Entire Region

The unlocking of such a significant sum — one of the EU's largest such steps in recent years — also carries an important signal for other member states. Brussels is demonstrating that it is ready to swiftly restore financial cooperation when European standards of democracy and the rule of law are upheld.
