European Parliament leadership demands investigation into pro-Moscow Luxembourg MEP
Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheiser has held at least four video calls with members of the Russian State Duma and visited Russia twice after the start of the Ukraine war. The European Parliament leadership now wants to investigate whether his activities comply with the institution's rules and interests.
PoliticsThe European Parliament leadership has launched an investigation into the activities of Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheiser, who has maintained close contacts with Russian officials while the European Union has imposed extensive sanctions on Russia.
According to Politico, Kartheiser has held at least four video calls with Russian State Duma members and, in addition, visited Russia twice after Russia launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Kartheiser's ties to Moscow have raised serious questions in the European Parliament, where the overwhelming majority of MEPs have stood firmly in support of Ukraine and anti-Russia sanctions. The continuation of contacts with Russian State Duma representatives during the sanctions period has attracted the attention of the institution's leadership.
The European Parliament leadership now wants to clarify whether the MEP's activities are in line with the parliament's internal rules and general institutional interests. The outcome of the investigation will determine what consequences Kartheiser may face.
