European Parliament MEPs demand clarification on Siemens chief's appointment as AI envoy

Dozens of European Parliament MEPs have pressed the European Commission over the appointment of Siemens board chair Jim Hagemann Snabe as the Commission's artificial intelligence envoy. A 40-member group, comprised primarily of Greens, Socialists, Liberals and Left members, is demanding clarification on the mandate of the appointment, the selection process and the assessment of potential conflicts of interest.

Politics

Political tensions have risen in Brussels over the European Commission's decision to appoint Siemens board chair Jim Hagemann Snabe as the Commission's artificial intelligence envoy. Forty European Parliament MEPs, representing primarily the Greens, Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe and Left factions, have written to the Commission demanding disclosure of the background to the appointment.

The MEPs want specific details on the scope of the envoy's mandate, the basis for the selection, and how any potential conflict of interest has been assessed. Siemens is one of Europe's largest technology conglomerates and is actively involved in commercial artificial intelligence development, raising questions about whether appointing the company's chief executive as the sector's primary representative at EU level is appropriate.

Critics view this as a classic case of regulatory capture, where a private sector representative gains influence over the very policy area in which his company has financial interests. The MEPs emphasise that EU artificial intelligence regulation is currently being shaped, and the envoy's influence could be substantial.

The European Commission has not publicly explained the process by which Snabe was selected or what conflict of interest assessment procedures were applied in his case. The MEPs are awaiting transparent answers from the Commission that would confirm the appointment meets EU ethical standards.
