Expert: smart sensors and simple habits help reduce water bills

Interior designer Mikvere recommends preventing home water damage with smarter solutions, including a water leak sensor that sends alerts directly to a smartphone. He also shares simple daily tips for saving water, from collecting shower water in a bucket to timely repairs of dripping taps.

Technology

Water damage at home can be costly, but according to interior designer Mikvere, preventing it doesn't need to be complicated or expensive. A few smart solutions and small habit changes are all it takes.

Leak sensor sends alert to your phone

"Let's be honest, generally no one is going to turn off the main water tap every time they leave home. That's why it's worth considering simpler solutions that help protect your home from water damage," says Mikvere. In his view, a smart water leak sensor is one of the most effective tools, as soon as the device comes into contact with water, it sends an alert signal. If the sensor is connected to a smart home app, the notification goes straight to the owner's smartphone, whether they're at work or on holiday.

Simple tips help save litres

In addition to technical solutions, Mikvere recommends changing daily habits as well. While waiting for shower water to warm up, it's worth collecting the initial cold water in a bucket and later using it to water indoor plants or balcony flowers, this saves a few litres effortlessly.

In the garden and on the balcony, covering flower beds with natural mulch helps retain moisture in the soil longer, so plants don't need to be watered as often. Fruits and vegetables should be washed first in a basin and then rinsed under the tap rather than running water continuously. Fresh berries can be effectively cleaned of dirt and fertiliser residue by soaking them in soapy water.

Dripping tap empties your wallet

Mikvere considers timely repair of dripping taps and leaking toilet tanks particularly important. While these may seem like minor issues, over time they can waste a significant amount of water, and this also comes with a noticeable extra charge on the water bill. Mixers and valves should be checked regularly, and any damage found should be fixed immediately.
