Politics

Russian investigative media outlet "Važnõje istorii" published an investigation revealing that the Agaev family, closely tied to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, is investing millions of euros in European real estate while a family member sits in the Russian State Duma.

Luxembourg funds and Berlin

According to documents in the Luxembourg business registry, Bator Agaev lives in Berlin and holds Belgian citizenship. He owns 56.16% of the Luxembourg real estate investment fund Everest One, founded in 2019, which invests in German commercial and office properties as well as hotels, healthcare facilities, and residential buildings. Additionally, Bator Agaev owns 43.5% of the Luxembourg company Mimco Real Estate Holding, which had placed approximately 35 million euros into German real estate investments by 2022.

Bator's brother, Bekhaan Agaev, is a State Duma member in the United Russia faction, first elected to parliament in 2011. Bekhaan is also the founder of the mixed martial arts club United Russian Fighters. According to "Važnõje istorii," this club and associated individuals have assisted Russian military personnel in Ukraine: in 2024, the club sent a large humanitarian aid shipment to support combat battalions.

Kadyrov's "dear brother" and oil money

The family's background is illuminated by the story of father Vakhha Agaev. Vakhha Agaev was himself a former State Duma deputy, whom Ramzan Kadyrov called his "dear brother." Investigative journalists are aware that the Agaev family belongs to the Chechen leader's inner circle. Vakhha Agaev died in 2020, and in recognition of his service, a street in the Chechen city of Urus-Martan was named after him.

In the late 1990s, Vakhha Agaev founded the company Yug-nefteprodukt, which dealt in the sale of Chechen oil. Together with his sons, he held stakes in oil refineries in Tuapse and Krasnodar. According to "Važnõje istorii," the family has invested money earned from oil into real estate both in Russia and Europe.

The investigation is based on leaked data about owners of companies and funds registered in Luxembourg, to which several investigative journalists around the world gained access.
