Singer-songwriter and film producer Olari Oja explained on Vikerraadio that songwriting resembles documentary work. In his view, a songwriter is a mark of the era who reflects what is happening around us.
CultureSinger-songwriter and film producer Olari Oja shared his perspective on the nature of songwriting on Vikerraadio, comparing it to documentary work. According to Oja, a songwriter writes about things and feelings that matter to them, occasionally taking an observer's position.
"A songwriter is a mark of the era, they show what is happening around us," said Oja. For him, the creation of songs is not merely artistic expression, but also a kind of historical record, where personal experience intertwines with a broader social context.
In Oja's view, a documentary approach to songwriting gives depth and authenticity. When you write about things you have experienced yourself or observed closely, it reaches the listener in a completely different way than simply made-up stories.
