PoliticsFinland has confiscated Russian state assets totalling approximately 3.7 million since the beginning of 2026. The confiscation was carried out following a request from Ukraine's state energy company Naftogaz and its subsidiaries.
This represents one of the most concrete examples of how Western countries have begun actively using frozen Russian assets to cover the damage caused to Ukraine. Naftogaz is one of Ukraine's largest state-owned enterprises, engaged in natural gas production, transport and distribution.
Finland's decision reflects a broader trend within the European Union, where discussions are underway and mechanisms are being implemented to use Russia's frozen state assets for Ukraine's benefit. The confiscated 3.7 million will go towards meeting the claims of Naftogaz and its affiliated companies.
