Finland is strengthening its eastern border security by deploying airships, or dirigibles. These new aircraft are already operational and are planned to be used in NATO exercises taking place in the coming weeks.

Airships are particularly well-suited for border surveillance as they can remain airborne for extended periods and cover vast areas. This enables Finnish authorities to conduct more extensive monitoring of activity in border regions, which is especially important given the long shared border with Russia.

Finland has made significant investments in recent years to strengthen its eastern border defence capabilities. The country joined NATO in 2023 and has since actively participated in the alliance's joint exercises and reinforced its border security infrastructure.
