First aid expert: Cold therapy is the first and most important step in summer injuries

Summer months bring an increase in injuries due to active lifestyles and increased alcohol consumption. First aid trainer Ain Siimon recommends that people think through potential risks before summer activities and understand the fundamentals of first aid. When trauma occurs, the use of cold therapy is one of the first and most important measures.

Estonia

Estonia's summer season and warm weather bring a significant increase in injuries – both from sports and active pursuits as well as from increased alcohol consumption. First aid trainer Ain Siimon emphasises that before any summer activity, it is worth considering what dangers might lurk and how to respond to them.

According to Siimon, when trauma occurs, the most important and fastest-acting aid is cold therapy. The use of cold – whether an ice pack, cold water, or another suitable means – helps reduce swelling, relieve pain, and limit the spread of tissue damage. The sooner cold can be applied to the injury site, the better the recovery prospects.

Risks increase in summer

Summer activities such as cycling, swimming, hiking, and various sports significantly increase the likelihood of accidents. In addition, alcohol slows people's reaction times and weakens their decision-making ability, which can lead to situations where the risk of injury is higher than usual. Therefore, everyone should be more vigilant and cautious.

First aid knowledge is essential

Ain Siimon recommends that anyone planning to spend active time in the summer either refresh their existing first aid knowledge or take a relevant course. Basic knowledge – how to respond to bleeding, fractures, or burns – can save a life or significantly ease suffering in critical situations. This is especially important for families with children.
