Gerry Konnov to President: Estonia Does Not Need Political Stagnation Now

Isamaa politician Gerry Konnov addresses President Alar Karis, noting that government approval ratings have fallen to a historic low. Konnov argues that the strong mandate gained in the 2023 elections has turned into a deep crisis of confidence due to internal conflicts, contradictory messaging, and tax policy controversies. He emphasizes that Estonia needs strong leadership now, not political stagnation.

Opinion

Isamaa politician Gerry Konnov has addressed President Alar Karis with a statement highlighting a serious crisis of confidence affecting the current governing coalition.

Golden mandate wasted

Konnov recalls that following the 2023 Riigikogu elections, the coalition took office with a rare and strong popular mandate. Voters sought stability and firm leadership at a time when Europe's security situation was tense, the economy under pressure, and people's living standards increasingly difficult. "The election result at the time gave the coalition a strong mandate and an unusually comfortable position in Estonian politics," Konnov writes.

From this overwhelming victory has come, in his view, a deep crisis of confidence. Government approval ratings have plummeted to historic lows, and not by chance.

Trust does not disappear overnight

Konnov explains that trust erodes when people feel that instead of the promised stability, they see constant internal squabbles, contradictory messages, political infighting, tax policy controversies, and indifference to ordinary people's concerns.

"Increasingly, the impression remains that the coalition spends more energy enjoying its own image than solving Estonia's problems," writes the Isamaa politician. In his view, this is a situation where the country needs clear and strong leadership, yet instead political stagnation prevails.

Appeal to the President

With his appeal to the president, Konnov signals that the situation has become so serious that it deserves the head of state's attention. In a difficult period of security and economic challenges, Estonia cannot afford a government that has become mired in internal conflicts and can no longer fulfill the voters' trust.
