TechnologyThe Estonian government has approved an unmanned aircraft, or drone, roadmap extending to 2030. The document sets an ambitious goal: Estonia should become one of Europe's leading countries in the field of drone technology development and testing.
According to Prime Minister Kristen Michal, the government wants to accelerate the development of Estonia's domestic drone industry. In his view, a favourable operational environment for the drone sector creates manifold benefits, strengthening Estonia's security, boosting the economy, and helping new technologies reach the market faster.
The roadmap provides concrete direction for entrepreneurs, researchers, and state agencies to coordinate activities related to drone technology. Plans include creating conditions that would allow Estonia to test and deploy unmanned aircraft more flexibly and rapidly than before.
The drone sector is a rapidly growing field globally, with applications in both civilian and defence purposes. Estonia is a small but digitally advanced country, which provides a good starting point for the development of a drone ecosystem. Dense settlement, access to natural testing grounds, and strong IT infrastructure create favourable conditions for this.
