EstoniaA homeowner in Ilmandu village, Harku parish, captured a striking wildlife moment straight out of a nature documentary — a grass snake hunting and consuming a frog on their own freshly mown lawn in Harjumaa, Estonia.
The scene unfolded on the neatly trimmed grass of the property's courtyard, where the snake had managed to catch a frog that appeared almost comically large in comparison to the predator itself. The homeowner managed to photograph the encounter before it concluded.
Grass snakes (Natrix natrix) are the most common snake species in Estonia and are completely harmless to humans. They are protected under Estonian law and are frequently found near water bodies, gardens, and meadows. Frogs and toads make up the bulk of their diet, and it is not unusual for the snakes to tackle prey that seems disproportionately large.
Sightings like this serve as a reminder that wildlife encounters can happen in the most ordinary of domestic settings, even in suburban areas close to Tallinn. Residents are encouraged to leave grass snakes undisturbed, as they play an important role in the local ecosystem by controlling amphibian and rodent populations.
