Gray paint of Vikerkaare bridge near Peedu raises questions among residents
A colorful bridge on Vikerkaare Street in the Peedu suburb near Elva has been painted gray. Local resident Raivo explains that the paint was applied to cover obscene graffiti written in May that had continued to be an eyesore.
EstoniaIn the Peedu garden suburb near Elva, a bridge on Vikerkaare Street at the end of the road has been a topic of discussion recently, as it has lost its cheerful and colorful appearance and turned gray.
Peedu resident Raivo explains that this was not a planned renovation or an aesthetic decision. "Whatever paint was available was used to cover something up so children wouldn't see the vulgarity. It was the same old obscene words written in May that were covered up," he says.
So the now-gray bridge is essentially a quick fix to a problem: obscene words had been written on the bridge, which locals felt were unsuitable for children and families to see. To quickly cover up the graffiti, they simply used whatever paint was on hand.
The situation has prompted Peedu residents to discuss who should be responsible for maintaining public spaces and infrastructure, and what long-term solutions might exist so that a place important to the community can regain its original appearance.
