Henri Veesaar ahead of NBA draft: five or six clubs have called Toijala
Ahead of the NBA draft taking place on Tuesday evening, Estonia's basketball prospect Henri Veesaar's chances of making the first round are considered strong. Ten mock drafts place the young player between picks 22-30, with potential landing spots including the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers among others. Jukka Toijala, Estonia's former national team coach, confirmed that five to six NBA clubs have inquired about Veesaar.
SportThe NBA draft takes place on Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, with Estonian basketball fans' attention focused on young Henri Veesaar. Most analysts believe he will be selected in the first round, specifically between picks 22 and 30.
Nine out of ten recent mock drafts place Veesaar in exactly that range. Experts cite the New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers as possible landing spots. A first-round pick would guarantee Veesaar an automatically guaranteed contract for two seasons, while in the second round the terms would have to be negotiated separately with the club.
Toijala: NBA background work is thorough
Jukka Toijala, Estonia's former national team coach, revealed that over the past few months five to six NBA organizations have called him to inquire about Veesaar's playing and personal qualities. "I've had calls from five to six clubs," said Toijala, emphasizing that interest has been significant.
According to Toijala, NBA scouts' attention no longer extends merely to statistics and game footage. Increasingly important are questions about what kind of player he appears to be in a coach's eyes, how he communicates with teammates, and how he handles pressure situations.
Reputation and character as important as skills
Toijala explained that over the years the NBA has substantially expanded its background work. Where previously they confined themselves to watching film and making isolated observations, they now compile extensive files on players and seek assessments from multiple sources. This means that Veesaar's draft process revolves not only around his basketball abilities, but also around his reputation and character.
Even if Veesaar does not make the first round, he is expected to be selected early in the second round. But signs suggest that Estonian basketball may gain a new NBA representative already on Tuesday night.
