Hiking tip: you don't need to carry water, you can purify it yourself in nature

On a hike, you don't need to carry litres of water with you, as there are several ways to purify drinking water in nature. The most common methods are water filters, water purification tablets, and boiling water. A lighter backpack makes hiking more comfortable and enjoyable.

Culture

During warm summer hiking, you need to drink more than usual, both because of the heat and physical exertion. Trekking with a backpack burns calories and requires proper fluid and food intake. However, there is no need to carry heavy water bottles, as drinking water can be purified in nature.

Three main methods

The most popular way is a portable water filter, which can be found both in Estonian shops and foreign online stores. Filters are lightweight and don't take up much space in a backpack-you simply pump water through the filter and it's ready to drink.

A second option is water purification tablets, which are also compact and easy to carry. The third classic method is boiling water, which does require more time and equipment, but is a reliable and cheap solution.

Spring water is the best choice

If there is a natural spring near your hiking trail, you can confidently quench your thirst there. Spring water is generally cleaner than water taken from stagnant water bodies, but it should be purified if necessary.

The most important thing is to find a method that works for you before you set out and make sure your equipment is in good condition. A lighter backpack means a more pleasant hiking experience, and purifying water yourself is one of the easiest ways to reduce the weight you carry.
