Home Design Expert: Your Driveway Reveals More About You Than You Think
First impressions of a home are formed on the driveway, not inside the house. A home design expert explains which solutions stand the test of time and which choices make a poor first impression.
CultureMany homeowners invest thousands of euros in stylish kitchen furniture and modern interior design, but overlook one of the most important details – the driveway. Home design experts warn that the first impression of a house forms long before guests step through the door.
The driveway's material, shape and condition give viewers a quick sense of how much the owner values their home. Rapidly deteriorating gravel drives or concrete with cracks leave an impression of neglect, even if the interior of the house is first-rate.
Which solutions work best?
According to experts, the most timeless choices are natural stone and quality concrete, which retain their appearance for decades. It is also important that the driveway is wide enough – at least 2.5–3 metres – and that its edges are properly defined, whether with plantings, stone borders or other decorative elements.
A poor impression is left by cracked paving stones, uneven surfaces and cracks overgrown with weeds. Overly colourful materials that don't match each other also create a visually chaotic result.
Simple maintenance, big impact
The expert emphasises that regular maintenance is just as important as the initial choice of material. Washing the driveway, removing weeds and de-icing in winter not only extend the life of the surface, but also keep the overall appearance in good order. A little attention to this often underestimated area can significantly increase the perceived value of the entire property.
