PoliticsHungary announced it has reached an agreement with Ukraine on minority rights issues – a move that could clear the way for Kyiv to begin accession negotiations with the European Union. The Ukrainian side has not yet publicly confirmed the agreement.
Hungary's blockade may be ending
Budapest has long blocked Ukraine's progress in the EU accession process, citing concerns over the rights of Hungary's minority communities in Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been one of the most vocal opponents of Ukraine's EU membership, demanding specific guarantees from Kyiv to protect the Hungarian community living in Ukraine before offering his support.
If the agreement is confirmed, it would represent a significant breakthrough on Ukraine's path to European integration. Ukraine's accession process has been complicated, and negotiations have repeatedly stalled due to opposition from various member states.
Ukraine's path to the EU
The European Union granted Ukraine candidate status in 2022, shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion. Since then, Ukraine has had to implement numerous reforms to meet EU membership requirements. Safeguarding minority rights is one of many conditions that Brussels has demanded of Kyiv.
If Hungary's blockade is removed, it will pave the way for formal accession negotiations, which are strategically crucial for Ukraine both in terms of military and economic support. EU membership would give Ukraine access to the benefits of a single market and strengthen the country's security in the long term.
