Isamaa asks President Karis to refuse to promulgate public broadcaster law
Helir-Valdor Seeder, head of the Isamaa parliamentary faction, has appealed to President Alar Karis requesting that the law amending the public broadcaster (ERR) legislation, passed by parliament on Wednesday, be left unsigned. According to Seeder, procedural errors occurred during the law's processing. The law was voted for by MPs from the coalition parties-the Reform Party, Estonia 200, and the Social Democrats.
PoliticsHelir-Valdor Seeder, head of the Isamaa parliamentary faction, has turned to President Alar Karis with a request to leave unsigned the law amending the public broadcaster legislation, which was adopted in parliament on Wednesday, 18 June 2026.
According to Seeder, procedural errors occurred during the law's processing, which give the president grounds to refuse to promulgate it. Seeder did not publicly elaborate on the specific circumstances in his appeal.
Coalition voted for the law
MPs from the coalition parties-the Reform Party, Estonia 200, and the Social Democrats-voted in favour of the amendment to the public broadcaster law. Isamaa, by contrast, has opposed the adoption of the law and is now seeking a way through the president to halt the law's entry into force.
According to the Constitution, President Karis is given the right to refuse to promulgate a law if he finds that it conflicts with the Constitution or if significant errors have been made in its processing. In such a case, the president sends the law back to parliament for reconsideration.
