SportThe sixth match day of the football World Cup in North America delivered plenty of dramatic moments, with Lionel Messi's historic hat-trick and Jordan's surprising draw against Austria standing out as the highlights.
Messi rises to the top of World Cup history
The Argentina-Algeria match generated the most discussion, with the defending champions taking a 3:0 victory with all three goals credited to Lionel Messi. Messi scored once in the first half and twice in the second, reaching 16 goals in World Cup history, equalling the all-time record, held by German Miroslav Klose. Statistically, Algeria controlled the ball slightly more (52 per cent versus 48), but Argentina dominated in shots: 10 attempts versus 7, with six on target, while Algeria failed to hit Argentina's goal even once.
France's masterclass came earlier in the day with a 3:1 victory over Senegal. Kylian Mbappé scored twice and became France's all-time leading goalscorer. Norway also showed Iraq their superiority, beating them 4:1. Erling Haaland added two goals to the scoreline and Norway's overall dominance was confirmed by the xG metric: Norway 2.52 and Iraq just 0.76. Norway made 12 shot attempts (5 on target) and Iraq 11 (1 on target).
Jordan holds Austria
The day's final match was the group encounter between Austria and Jordan. From the start of the match, Jordan signalled that they were dangerous on the counter-attack, with Ehsan Haddadi's attempt going just wide in the second minute. In the 17th minute, Austria's goalkeeper Alexander Schlager came to the rescue, saving a shot from Odeh Al Fakhouri. Austria scored first: Romano Schmid drove the ball into the top corner from around twenty metres in the 20th minute.
The first half ended 1:0 in Austria's favour, but the match was more open than the score suggested, with Jordan attempting 8 shots to Austria's 6, and three of Jordan's attempts finding the target compared to Austria's one. In the second half, Jordan continued to press and in the 50th minute came the expected equaliser: Ali Olwan took the ball from an opponent in midfield, drove towards Austria's goal and struck the ball superbly into the far corner. The final result was a 1:1 draw between Austria and Jordan.
