Lost parrot found perched on car mirror in Tartu

An exotic parrot unexpectedly landed on the side mirror of a parked car on Laia Street in Tartu and was taken to the Tartu animal shelter. The bird is friendly and social but clearly prefers human company. The shelter is waiting until 8 July for the previous owner to come forward, otherwise they will seek a new home for the bird.

A driver in Tartu on Laia Street had a surprise when an exotic parrot landed on the side mirror of his parked vehicle. The bird was caught and taken to the Tartu animal shelter so it would not have to wander alone in the city centre.

According to Tartu animal shelter director Annika Mölder, the bird is very friendly and social. Initially, the parrot was placed in a quiet room of its own, but this arrangement did not suit it at all. "At first it was kept in its own room, then it lost its appetite and constantly wanted to escape through the bars," Mölder explained. Since then, the parrot has moved to a break room where it can spend time among staff, watch people passing by and look out the window. In such company, the bird seems noticeably better.

The shelter is waiting until 8 July for the previous owner to come forward. If no one arrives to claim the bird by then, they will begin looking for a suitable new home for the parrot.

This is not the first such experience for the Tartu shelter. According to the director, since 2017 their care has included budgerigars, an African grey parrot, cockatiels and a Moluccan cockatoo-all of which eventually found their way back to their owners.

If anyone recognizes their lost bird from the photo or description, they are encouraged to contact the Tartu animal shelter.
