Märt Ibrus: A Century of Estonian Basketball Has Unfolded in the Tallinn-Tartu Rivalry
Sports historian Märt Ibrus looks back on a century of Estonian basketball history, which began in 1925 with the first championship title. This May marked the centennial champion team, reached through the traditional rivalry between Tallinn and Tartu.
SportEstonian basketball is marking an extraordinary milestone this year – in May 2026, the hundredth champion team was crowned, a remarkable testament to the continuity and vitality of this sport in our country.
It all began in March 1925, when a competition between three Tallinn clubs crowned the first Estonian basketball champion. At the time, it was the Sports club, consisting mainly of schoolboys, that claimed victory, leaving both Kalevi and NMKÜ in their wake. Those young players could scarcely have imagined then that they were laying the foundation for a century-long tradition.
The Tallinn and Tartu Duel
Sports historian Märt Ibrus emphasizes in his analysis that the century of Estonian basketball has largely developed against the backdrop of a fascinating rivalry between two major cities – Tallinn and Tartu. This geographical competition has given Estonian basketball's landscape a distinctive character and sharp competitive edge.
Throughout the century, the championship title has always been highly prized, and its winners have been regarded as national sports heroes. The continuity stretching back from the schoolboys of the 1920s to today's professionals and internationally recognised clubs is something basketball enthusiasts can justifiably take pride in.
A Century Full of History
The celebration of the hundredth championship title in spring 2026 is a significant event for all of Estonian sports. It demonstrates that despite historical and political upheavals, basketball has remained vibrant in Estonia and has renewed itself with each generation.
