CultureA study on Russian property relations gets a new lease of life: Meduza Publishing is releasing an updated version of journalist Maxim Trudoljubov's work "People Behind the Fence: Private Space, Power and Property in Russia." The book examines the emergence and transformation of private ownership as an institution in Russia over decades.
Maxim Trudoljubov is an experienced journalist, fellow at the Kennan Institute and editor-in-chief of The Russia File. His research first appeared in 2015 and remains to this day one of the most comprehensive analyses of how private ownership has developed in Russia and what functions it serves in society.
The new version, published 11 years later, is substantially expanded. In it, Trudoljubov addresses recent developments in Russian property relations, including the so-called Dolinaja case, which illustrates how redistribution processes operate in Russia today. The author himself explains why Russians seem to feel constrained living in the world's largest country – a question that touches on both physical space and legal security.
The book is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the deeper layers of Russian society and economy, and how property, power and privacy are intertwined.
