Meta platforms Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp went down in the afternoon, leaving millions of users worldwide in confusion. From four o'clock onwards, thousands of people were unable to load their news feeds or even log into the platforms.

While ordinary users stared anxiously at their phone screens and social media influencers experienced an existential crisis, Estonian writer and director Mart Sander took a different approach to the situation. "To be honest, I feel a certain schadenfreude," he admits, leaving open the question of whether the outage was Putin's handiwork, an artificial intelligence rebellion, or the beginning of an alien invasion.

According to Sander, Meta's massive crash reflects the dependency that social media platforms have created in society. The fact that the entire world came to a standstill for a moment because some server crashed is, in his view, a telling sign of the times we live in.

The outage affected both individuals and businesses who rely on Meta platforms for daily communication and marketing. Many users turned to alternative channels to find out what caused the glitch and to notify each other that the problem was widespread.
