Microbiologists warn: facial towels should be changed much more frequently
Facial towels may be a hidden source of danger in daily skincare routines. According to microbiologists, they rapidly accumulate bacteria and fungi that cause acne, irritation, and inflammation. Experts recommend changing towels far more frequently than most people are accustomed to.
CultureA facial towel is something typically considered completely safe-it hangs in the bathroom, dries your face after washing, and then waits in its place for the next use. But microbiologists warn that this very routine could be one of the main reasons why many people suffer from acne, skin irritation, or inflammation.
The damp and warm environment created by a towel hung in the bathroom is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Each time a towel is used to dry the face, it collects dead skin cells, excess oil, and microorganisms. The next time the towel is used, these are transferred back onto the skin.
Experts emphasize that most people change facial towels far too infrequently. The recommended change should occur every two to three days, not once a week as many are accustomed to. Ideally, one might also consider using single-use paper towels, which completely eliminate the buildup of bacteria.
The way the towel dries also plays a role: if it doesn't dry properly between uses, the number of microorganisms increases even more rapidly. Good ventilation in the bathroom and hanging the towel straight help reduce the problem, but they cannot replace regular changing.
