Murderer Daniel Kaasik must return to prison under appellate court ruling

Daniel Kaasik, sentenced to ten years in prison and released on conditional liberty a year ago, must return to prison for nearly five years under an appellate court ruling. A district court decided a month ago that he did not need to return to prison, but the appellate court overturned that decision. Kaasik, who has since found employment and begun his studies, intends to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.

Daniel Kaasik, imprisoned for ten years for a brutal murder committed in the early 2010s, now faces imprisonment again after the appellate court decided he must return to prison for nearly five years.

Kaasik was released on conditional liberty with an ankle monitor approximately a year ago. A month ago, the district court ruled that he did not need to return to prison, but the appellate court overturned that decision and ordered the man to return to detention.

Life was beginning to improve

Reflecting on his year of freedom, Kaasik said he felt truly human for half a year. According to him, the interim period was full of changes-he has begun studying and found employment, which is why he believes the appellate court's decision is unjust.

Kaasik intends to challenge the ruling and take the matter to the Supreme Court. The specific circumstances that led to the reversal of conditional release will become clear as the court proceedings continue.
