Museum associations seek state funding for new storage facilities in 2027 budget

The Estonian Museum Association, Estonian Museums Society, and ICOM Estonia have appealed to Parliament and the Government to allocate funds in the 2027 state budget for constructing new museum collection storage facilities. The organisations emphasise that current storage capacity has reached critical limits.

Estonia

The Estonian Museum Association, Estonian Museums Society, and ICOM Estonia — the Estonian branch of the international museum organisation ICOM — have submitted a joint appeal to Parliament and the Government calling for funds to be allocated in the 2027 state budget for the construction of new museum collection storage facilities.

The three museum organisations stress that Estonia's existing museum storage conditions no longer meet modern requirements. Collections have grown substantially over decades, but the physical infrastructure has not kept pace.

The organisations behind the appeal hope that the state will recognise the proper preservation of cultural heritage as a priority and secure the necessary funds during the coming years' budget planning. Museum collections are irreversibly damaged if stored in unsuitable conditions — which includes humidity and temperature problems.
