Narva Language Lyceum Director Dismissed: Violations or Political Decision?

On Friday, 29 May, Narva Language Lyceum director Nadežda Tšerkašina was dismissed. The dismissal order was signed by Narva Mayor Katri Raik, meaning Tšerkašina loses her position immediately.

According to the city's official statement, the dismissal is due to violations identified in school administration. The city authorities have not publicly disclosed specific details about the nature of these violations, which has fuelled various speculations.

Several members of the Narva community and observers have questioned the official explanation, suggesting that political motives may lie behind the decision. Narva Language Lyceum is one of the city's most important educational institutions, and its leadership has been under scrutiny in connection with Estonia's education reform, which envisages a transition to Estonian-language instruction.

The situation in schools in Narva, Estonia's largest Russian-speaking city, has been a politically sensitive issue for some time. The management of educational institutions and language policies are often at the intersection of both local government and national education policy, which is why any significant personnel change in city schools attracts broader public attention.
